About Bernardo
Bernardo was founded in 1946 by architect, artist and best-selling author Bernard Rudofsky, with the encouragement of Diana Vreeland of Vogue. Inspired by ancient architectural and social theories, his 1944 exhibition, "are clothes modern?" At the Museum of Modern Art, Bernardo sandal sandals were designed to free the foot from the shackles of the 1940s. The original sandal collection debuted at the ritz-carlton in Manhattan with six designs. Rudovsky is credited with inventing the modern female sandal. For many years the company brand was an immediate success and its sandals were regularly featured in high-end fashion magazines such as vogue and Harper's bazaar, photographing some of the most influential fashion photographers of the 20th century, such as Richard Avedon, Owen Payneberstein, Helmut Newton and Melvin Sokolsky.
